Westerly’s Gold …...Her People

The Westerly Historical Society is delighted to introduce this work by Thomas A. O’Connell. Mr. O’Connell has unearthed the lives and achievements of our hidden treasures—some of our most talented predecessors—in Westerly’s Gold.

After a career teaching English, Mr. O’Connell, as Editor of our Society Newsletter, turned to history. Combining these strengths, he has produced a most interesting collection of stories about Westerly’s finest citizens.

Our own Admiral Dunn appears, not just as a famous inventor, but as one of our neighbors. We see Westerly’s Elizabeth Fitz Pendleton, who became the president of prestigious Wellesley College. We meet Westerly’d first high school principal, Osceola Holcomb Kile. We learn about some of our other institutions, such as the original armory, the origins of the police department, and Town budget machinations during the Depression. We find that change is less than it seems over the past one hundred years.

Leaves of My Journal—A. Whaler’s Writings

Compiled and Edited by Dwight C. Brown, Jr.

The compilation of this series of articles were extracted from the Narragansett Weekly of 1861, in various issues. The Narragansett Weekly was a newspaper being published on Thursdays of each week and was under the guidance of the Utter family, who were members of the Seventh-day Baptists in Westerly.

This series of articles were written by a person who wished only to have his name known as ‘A. Whaler.’ The name of the ship, the Indus, which he mentions at the beginning of the series, evidently is a fictitious name as no reference could be found by the compiler for a vessel of this name. Neither could a vessel of this name be found as sailing from the port of New Bedford anytime in the 1840’s.

In and About Westerly

Written, compiled, and edited by Thomas A. O’Connell

Most of the essays in this book were originally published in the Westerly Historical Society’s monthly newsletter over the past few years.  Together, these twenty articles paint a picture of the life and activities of Westerly’s citizens.  The picture is by no means complete, yet these glimpses allow the reader knowledge of times past.

The book also contains a complete index of people, events, and place names as well as a list of the society’s publications since 1913.
